DEVELOPMENT & OVERVIEW OF EDUCATION IN THE BAHAMAS


This course serves as an Orientation to the Department of Education, to new hires who may not have had the opportunity to attend the Opening Ceremony of the New Hires Orientation. During this ceremony the leaders of the Ministry of Education & Technical & Vocational Training brought remarks and welcomed New Hires to the Department.  It is intended that ALL new hire have the opportunity to hear the encouragement provided by the Leaders. 

The Programme seeks to provide new and beginning teachers with support, guidance, feedback and problem solving strategies, while introducing them to a network,  of colleagues willing to share resources, insights, practices and motivation; for mentors are friends, confidants, and advisors.

To afford maximum benefit from the programme, all participants must engage in a course of professional development. The Department of Education has instituted this program as an essential component of orientation of teachers new to our system; therefore, all new and beginning teachers are expected to participate. 


This Moodle course is designed to empower teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance student learning through effective pedagogical practices. Participants will explore key principles for good practice in teaching and learning, including student-centered approaches, inclusive teaching strategies, assessment for learning, and promoting active engagement and motivation. Through a series of four modules, participants will engage in readings, discussions, activities, and multimedia resources to deepen their understanding and application of these principles.

Course Rationale: Creating a teacher wellness training module is an excellent initiative to support educators in managing stress, promoting mental health, and fostering a positive work environment.


This self-paced professional development course equips elementary educators with foundational knowledge and practical strategies for delivering high-quality phonics instruction. Grounded in the science of reading, the course emphasizes a structured, explicit approach to teaching phonics that supports all learners—especially early and struggling readers.
